Painting Wizards paints houses, roofs, complexes and commercial property in Stellenbosch and across the Cape Winelands. Send the form on this page with what needs doing and we will come out, measure it and put a written price in front of you — itemised, so the preparation and the paint system are separate lines rather than one number.
What we find on Stellenbosch walls
Stellenbosch carries the densest concentration of Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings in the country, much of it lime-plastered, alongside modern student and estate housing. The property mix is heritage houses, student accommodation, wine-estate buildings and modern developments.
The historic core is under heritage protection. Lime-plastered walls need a breathable mineral system, and using a modern acrylic on them causes visible damage within a season.
Why paint fails in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch sits in the Cape Winelands, which gets around 750 mm a year, more against the mountains and the hottest summers in the Western Cape, regularly over 35 degrees. The result is the hottest summers in the province opening cracks through thermal movement, and moisture trapped behind coatings that cannot breathe.
Across Cape Winelands the practical consequence is heat movement opening cracks, and moisture trapped behind non-breathable coatings, and a repaint interval of six to eight years on cement plaster, less on lime. A coating put on over a failing one fails at the rate of the layer underneath it, not at its own — which is why the preparation, not the paint, usually decides how long the job lasts.
The work itself
- Crack repair and bridging — heat movement opens plaster, and a rigid coating cracks again along the same line.
- Flexible exterior systems chosen for movement rather than for the lowest price per litre.
- Breathable systems on lime plaster where the building is old enough to need them — which in this part of the province is often.
- Exterior — walls, trims, gutters, fascias, boundary walls and outbuildings, all measured rather than estimated.
- Interior — walls, ceilings, skirtings and joinery.
- Roof — tile, corrugated and IBR, cleaned and treated first.
Two coats over a prepared surface is standard. A litre covers roughly 6 to 8 square metres per coat on smooth plaster and 4 to 5 on rough or porous work. Inland the working window is the real constraint: a wall in direct afternoon sun in midsummer is too hot to take paint properly, so elevations are worked in the order the sun leaves them. Between coats 4 to 6 hours is usually enough in this heat, and a full cure takes about 7 days.
How the price is worked out
Painting is priced on area, surface condition and the number of coats, so nobody can give you an honest Stellenbosch figure over the phone without seeing the surfaces.
The quote states the square metres measured, the crack repair and preparation included, the system specified and the number of coats. Boundary walls and outbuildings are measured and listed separately — on stands this size they are often a larger area than the house.
To start, we need the suburb, whether the work is inside, outside, the roof or a combination, roughly how big the property is, and what condition the surfaces are in — sound paint, flaking, damp, or bare plaster.
